I discovered a new service in Reno a few weeks ago that could dramatically change me. It’s called micro-current facials. They’re a healthy way to smooth wrinkles, firm sagging skin and decrease cellulite without going under the knife or being lasered. It’s a simple, relaxing process. There is no pain. I want to give away a piece of art or something else I've created, once a month, on the blog. The only requirement to participate is that you must be a member of the blog. Queen of Hearts

My previous post about 2012 shaping up has created a lot of interest in one of the paintings in the “after” pic. Many have expressed how much they love it and some have made offers to purchase it.

It’s titled Queen of Hearts and is the last gift I received from my best friend. I’ve always loved hearts and she had joked for many years I was the Queen of Hearts. The crown is very easy to see but you can only see the heart in the close up.

Tragically my best friend died in a 2004 house fire. I miss her terribly but smile inside every time I look at this painting. I'm sure you can understand why this painting is not for sale.

2012 is shaping up

I really looked forward to 2012. 2011 was disappointing in so many ways. As the first days of 2012 unfolded I began to fear another bad year. How can this be? I thought. I've always been a glass half full kind of person so I decided I needed to take action, change my surroundings.

I decided to start with my sewing room since I spend a lot of time in there. It's a VERY small room, measuring about 10x11. The only redeeming factor is that it has 12' ceilings preventing it from becoming claustrophobic. Unfortunately it gets very messy as the last show of the season approaches. And it sits, until the holidays are over. Quite depressing as you can see from the following picture.

I never dreamed I'd see the day that my room would look like this. Messy, dark, gloomy, creativity killer. It was my call to action. Change this eyesore, organize it, lighten it up, get storage room, get rid of stuff!

Off to Home Depot to explore my options. I decided 8' long shelves on standards would be a great solution. I thought 4 would be perfect but I discovered 5 would fit. I designed a sewing table 8' wide that would allow all 4 of my machines to be available at all times. It has storage shelves below which are presently filled with unfinished projects.

Storage containers that allowed the contents to be visible were a must, but no plastic. I discovered chicken wire baskets at World Market in 3 sizes. A bit pricey but they were so perfect I ignored the price and bought them. A little decorating and this is the result. What a difference!

I've been involved with various events at VSA Nevada for a number of years because I love their purpose. This weekend is their annual Jingles with Art & History. It's a fun family event and it's FREE!

Saturday, November 19 from 10 AM – 2 PM
•8 free kid’s art workshops and face painting.
•Tours of the holiday-decorated historic mansion built in 1877 and listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
•Free visits and photos with Santa. Bring your camera
•Author Patty Cafferata will be signing her book The Lake Mansion: Home to Reno’s Founding Families plus books on The Mapes Hotel, Piper’s Opera House, Goldfield Hotel and more.

My whimsical (sometimes wicked) Halloween creations will be in a special Halloween show at Ryrie's Art & Home, 6135 Lakeside Dr, Reno, NV. The date is October 7th, 4 PM - 7 PM. Come early because they will disappear quickly! Knowing Ryrie there will be some kind of goodies to munch on too.

2 days later - October 9th - I will be in Verdi at a Pumpkin Patch show. More wicked creations will magically appear there as well. Hours are 10 AM - 4 PM.

Both shows are short shows. Hope to see you there. Most of these items will NOT be duplicated at McQueen.

Halloween on my mind

Plan to start working on Halloween pieces tomorrow. First, this year's version of my boots and hats then on to witches, ghosts and who knows what. If you're looking for a particular Halloween item let me know. I'll see what I can do.

My fall calendar is up in the air. The show at Ryrie's may be canceled. New for this year is the Pumpkin Patch Festival at Verdi Elementary. It's October 9th from 10 AM - 4 PM. It is a fun filled family event. I'll be in the craft fair and selling nothing but fall items. Check my show calendar here before heading out to a particular show. Will post updates as I know them as well as mailing my annual letter in September.

The Flint Street Festival was Saturday at VSA Nevada. It went pretty well for a first time show. We plan to hold the show again next year, 3rd Saturday of July. July is a tough event month with Artown events happening everywhere. I'm thankful that so many people were introduced to the great work VSA does in our community. We're having a Holiday show the first weekend of December. Details to follow as soon as we finalize times, etc.

My thoughts now turn to my next show. It's Art in the Tahoe Garden which will be held August 13, 2011 at 6550 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe Vista, CA. Not sure what my product mix will be for this show. I want to create mixed media art pieces but my regular customers want whimsical doll creations. What to do, what to do.

Flint Street Festival benefiting VSA Nevada

I'm participating in the Flint Street Festival to benefit VSA Nevada at the Lake Mansion, 250 Court Street (at Arlington) Reno on Saturday, July 16th, 9AM-4PM. This is going to be a fun event for a great cause.

The Maui art scene

My husband & I have had the pleasure of spending the last 17 days on the island of Maui. It’s one of our favorite places to vacation because it basically has everything one could desire. Beautiful beaches, exquisite florals, lush green, waterfalls, a bamboo forest, the road to Hana, Tedeschi Winery, awesome quaint towns in the Upcountry and art galleries.

Maui has been both home and inspiration to some of the world's top artists for a very long time. This is evidenced by the abundance of studios and galleries showing exciting and imaginative works by artists of local, national and international fame. Realistic, stylized, abstract, oils, watercolors, prints, photographs or sculptures - whatever you like – you can find it here.

Most tourists start in Lahaina. There are numerous galleries on Front Street and many side streets. We have been in all of them numerous times over the years. The galleries sponsor an Art Walk on Fridays from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM. Most offer libations and some have live music. I recommend that you go early, park in the parking lot at Lahaina Market Place (121 Lahainaluna Road 2 hours free with validation and $1 hour after that), have dinner and then stroll.

Then it’s time to explore the rest of the island. Although we’ve done this many times during past trips, we always seem to find a new gem. This trip has blessed us with what we feel is our best find ever!

Makawao is a small town in Upcountry Maui. It has shops containing jewelry, souvenirs, exquisite wood items, a world renowned western store, excellent Mexican restaurant and a number of galleries, all containing the work of local artists. One of these sits at the corner of Makawao Ave. & Baldwin Ave. The converted gas station is funky but warm and inviting. It's the gallery of Julie Galeeva.

We discovered her work last year near the end of our trip. We had already exceeded our allotted art budget and settled for her print of a jacaranda tree. We had seen the jacarandas for the first time that trip as well. They bloom approximately mid April through May. We had always traveled middle of winter to escape Reno’s weather. We absolutely fell in love with these trees and scheduled this year’s trip to coincide with their blooming season. But I digress.

We returned to the gallery this year because this artist paints the best jacarandas we have seen. Julie was in the gallery this trip. She had just finished a jacaranda painting that morning which we totally fell in love with. It didn’t take long to become immersed in a discussion about the jacarandas, her other art, life, and more. We talked for several hours. It’s as if we were old friends. That’s how easy it is to talk to Julie. No pressure. Just a mutual respect, and passion, for art.

She made us an incredible offer on the jacaranda painting. Unfortunately we had decided we would not purchase any original art this trip so we bought a few more prints and left to eat at Polli’s.

My husband was surfing her website the next morning. I joined him. We discussed what an incredible artist she is, in every genre she paints. Told him we should seriously consider accepting her offer if we truly wanted one of her originals because we would never be offered such an extraordinary deal again (in my opinion). So off we went to Makawao.

We looked at all 4 jacaranda paintings and decided we still liked yesterday’s choice the best. But we also fell in love with one of her giclees with hand embellishments. The two looked incredible together. We had to buy both.

The paintings won’t arrive for a few weeks and then need to be framed. I will post pictures once they’re hung. For now, words cannot express how honored I am that Julie chose to offer her original art to us. We love her art but also feel this could be the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
